History of the Expansion Project 2016-2023
Public libraries are essential to the well-being of a community and a resource for its growth, touching the heart of an area’s development and prospects for its future. When a library is “functional and funded” (Harvey Chess), it partners with other institutions and provides information and space for further progress. Children, teens, and adults all benefit in equal measure.
Fort Bragg Branch Library has outgrown its current space. Moderate growth in our service area has increased our potential patronage, creating a need to expand services they find attractive. Communities on the coast of Mendocino County deserve a larger, more engaging library. That’s why the Expansion Project got started. Now take a look at this overview of the branch history showing how the project took shape.
A review of the library’s history shows how the 1987 arson fire led to its relocation to residential neighborhoods. The Friends began their stewardship of the new building, expanding in increments. First they converted the funeral home into a library in 1988, then remodeled the library in 2007. As the branch got busier, the Friends planned to expand the physical building and were able to support that goal in 2016 when the neighboring property became available. It is important to note that the rapid growth of this branch is tied to its placement near parks and as a “walkable destination” from city schools and downtown business district.
