Discover Our History ~ Discover Our Museum!
The Mendocino County Museum collects, conserves and celebrates the stories, artifacts, and archives of the people and places in Mendocino County.
The Roots of Motive Power Annual Steam Festival will include train rides and equipment demonstrations. The Museum has also scheduled a Coloring Station Activity for all visitors! The gift store will have 50% off all train items such as books, toys, DVDs, clothing, and more.
In October, the Museum will be a host site for the Art from Ashes exhibit. This community-sourced multimedia art exhibit will focus on documenting the Mendocino County wildfires in October 2017, and the process of rebuilding home, spirit, community, and reflecting our ability to rise from the destruction that was wrought.
This is a great opportunity to discover what makes this county so unique, fun, and fabulous so please visit soon! The Museum has free admission on the first Wednesday of every month.
Other exhibits on display include a 10,000 year-old Clovis Point, actual storefronts of historic businesses, 19th century stagecoaches and a “new settler” hippie van. We also have memorabilia from the famous race horse, Seabiscuit. Our Woven Worlds exhibit on Native Peoples of Mendocino County follows a descriptive timeline from Coyote to Casino … from first contact to self-determination. Near the front of the museum is a Veterans Memorial in honor of the 22 veterans who served in Vietnam. You’ll also find a gift and book shop inside the museum.
Located near the museum is a collection of restored antique logging and railroad equipment owned by the Roots of Motive Power, a volunteer organization dedicated to preservation and restoration of historical logging, steam and railroad equipment. Some of their collection of steam-powered locomotives and equipment are often stored in the Museum’s Engine House.
