Factfulness by Hans Rosling
Why do we resist the facts about human progress and tell ourselves “things are awful and likely to get worse?” Swedish statistician, Hans Rosling, challenges readers to adopt a more positive outlook. He shows how ten types of instinctual thinking distort our worldviews. The author writes “We need to learn to control our drama intake. Uncontrolled, our appetite for the dramatic goes too far, prevents us from seeing the world as it is and leads us terribly astray.” Is Rosling’s prescription for a positive outlook warranted by the facts? Maybe our worries and doubts are justified and serve useful ends to make us question the status quo and fight collectively for justice. Drama and tragedy are ancient human traits and have often led to wisdom—not just self-deception. Great discussion guarantee!
