The Incredibles

April 27, 2014 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Contemporary Animation Series - The IncrediblesThe Incredibles – Cinema Sundays! Contemporary Animation Series

The Incredibles is a 2004 comedic superhero film written and directed by Brad Bird, produced by Pixar Studios and released by Disney.   The Incredibles is a  contemporary animation film about a family of superheroes, named Incredible, who are forced to hide their powers and live a quiet suburban life until Father Incredible’s yearning to help people drags the entire family into a battle with an evil villain.

As a youth, Bird was enthralled by 1960s comic books and spy films.  He wrote The Incredibles as an extension of his love of superheroes and his personal family life.  Being an outsider at Pixar, he pitched The Incredibles, a difficult task after the box office failure of his first feature, The Iron Giant (1999). The animation team, carried over from The Iron Giant, was tasked with animating an all-human cast, requiring new technology in order to animate detailed human movement and anatomy, realistic human skin,  hair, and clothing.

The Incredibles was met with high critical acclaim, along with two Academy Awards. It became the first entirely animated film to win the prestigious Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. As of March 2014, a sequel is officially in development.

The Incredibles stars the voice talents of Craig T Nelson, Holly Hunter, Jason Lee, Samuel L Jackson and John Ratzenberger.

“The dad is always expected in the family to be strong, so I made him strong. The moms are always pulled in a million different directions, so I made her stretch like taffy. Teenagers, particularly teenage girls, are insecure and defensive, so I made her turn invisible and turn on shields. And ten-year-old boys are hyperactive energy balls. Babies are unrealized potential.” — Brad Bird, writer and director of The Incredibles.
