PLANT A SEED, READ
2026 Summer Reading
June 13-August 8
On June 13th, we’re launching our Plant a Seed, Read Summer Reading program, and we’re urging families to come to the library and participate. “We’ve planned a wonderful program for families to discover what’s available for their reading and learning enjoyment.,” said Peggy McGee, Senior Library Technician/Seed Librarian.
For eight weeks, from June 13th through August 8th, the library will host a range of free activities for children, teens, and adults to encourage and support a love of reading. Participants of all ages can win prizes for reaching their reading goals.
Our big Summer Reading kick-off event features Magical Nathaniel, an audience participation, high-energy magic show. Other themed events include Meet a Gardener, a hands-on event with Horticulturist Phoebe Hanson from the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens; Origami and Seeds, with Alan Foss of the Fort Bragg Garden Club; and a teen program, Hydroponics Made Easy, where teens will learn to grow plants in recycled bottles without soil. At summer’s end, we wrap up the program with an encore visit from Wild Things Animal Ambassadors.
Plus, throughout the summer, kids and teens are encouraged to create art using the Garden to Table theme. All mediums are accepted. At the end of Summer Reading, we will display their creations in the library for everyone to enjoy.
There’s also a serious side to summer reading. Research has shown that reading over the summer prevents reading loss between summer and fall. Studies also indicate that students who read recreationally outperform those who don’t. Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests and Fort Bragg Branch Library is committed to supporting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all families.
Plant a Seed, Read! is intended to connect us to the natural world and encourage us to learn more about the seed-to-table cycle while also planting literary seeds that feed our minds. Every story is a seed, let’s get planting together!
