“No live books were injured,” the artist assured us while setting up her new Book Art display at the library. “I use disowned, distressed or withdrawn books for my art. I’m always looking for books with interesting pictures and colors that appeal to the eyes.” No matter. As library staff, we still find it disconcerting (but totally intriguing!) to view these beautiful pieces of art, folded, fanned, clipped, and such, knowing they were once textbooks or dictionaries or other various volumes we may have read off the library shelves.

book art 5Local Mendocino County artist, Laura Wiecek, digs into old books (literally, with scissors) to create these beautiful works of art that reflect how we see old information in the modern world. Recycled, or Upcycled as it’s often referred to, Book Art is a unique way of sculpting precious tomes into works of art, preserving the sanctity of the written word for the enjoyment of generations to come.

book art 6You can check out Laura’s exceptional Book Art throughout the month of September @ Fort Bragg Branch Library and join Laura here at the library on September 26 @ 2 pm for a hands-on demonstration on how to make these wonderful creations on your own.
