Mendocino County Seed Circle 2024

Mendocino County Seed Circle 2024

Seed CircleFort Bragg Seed Library is thrilled to participate in the Mendocino County Seed Circle, a joint effort to increase local plant diversity.

Mendocino County Seed Circle is a group of community members who commit to, independently, growing one crop of local seeds for the season. After the growing season is complete, the participant selects the best plants from the crop, saves the seeds from those plants and returns them to the library to be distributed for future growers.

The purpose of the project is to encourage cross-pollination between varieties which we hope will facilitate adaptation to local conditions and, ultimately, increase local plant health in future generations. Our main objective is resilient, nutrient-dense and community-selected food crops, whose seeds will be freely available to any gardener who wants to grow them.

Seeds available for this year’s crops are: runner beans, dry beans, green beans, coastal flour corn, coastal melons, coastal sweet corn, cucumbers, kale, maxima and summer squash. All of them are diverse mixes to increase resilience, adaptation, colors, and reduce barriers for seed savers (no need to keep varieties separate in most cases).

We encourage every gardener to join us on our journey to increase local food resilience by participating in the Mendocino County Seed Circle, one crop at a time.
