SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Creative Writing Workshops\nWriters of the Mendocino Coast \n2nd Wednesdays of each month\, 2-3:30 pm \nThis month: GHOST STORIES – Get Ready for Halloween with\nRob Hawthorn \nWriters of the Mendocino Coast are providing free monthly creative writing workshops for adults. All workshops are lead by published authors and will feature different genres and themes each month. \nNo sign-up is required. Just bring yourself\, your BFF\, your notebook and your pen. \nFor more information about the writing workshops\, contact Writers of the Mendocino Coast at info@writersmendocino.org. You can also visit their website at writersmendocinocoast.org. \n\nRob Hawthorn is a husband\, a father\, a writer\, a podcaster\, and a bookseller who lives on Northern California’s Mendocino Coast.  He began writing seriously. at the age of nineteen\, when a story he submitted was published in a small science fiction magazine.  Three years later\, Rob tried his hand at writing for mainstream comic books.  Currently\, he’s working as a book seller and events coordinator for Gallery Bookshop\, one of the best independent bookstores on the planet.  His job as events coordinator has put Rob in touch with a vast community of writers and has helped him connect with an even larger community of readers and book lovers from around the world.  Rob has two podcasts\, one of which is about music\, and the other is a book club that examines 1960s comics through a modern lens.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author! a talk with Philip Zwerling
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Author! a talk with Philip Zwerling\nThursday\, September 19\, 2024\, 2-3 pm\n  \n \nIn Search of the Thin Man \nThe man who created the boldest hard boiled fiction\, Dashiell Hammett\, wrote The Thin Man in 1933 and launched the fun-loving\, booze-swilling\, mystery-solving couple Nick and Nora Charles into American culture. MGM sold millions of movie tickets by casting William Powell and Myrna Loy as this classiest of romantic couples. Over 14 years and six films\, these stars navigated grave periods of history: the Great Depression\, World War II\, and the Cold War. The novel and films live on as gems of a unique gritty sophistication. \nThis complete history of The Thin Man series covers the brightest stars\, tastiest scandals\, headlines and conflicts behind these classic films. With a cast of hundreds\, we see Hammett\, his lover Lillian Hellman\, and their friend Dorothy Parker fight alcoholism\, sexual convention and Senator Joe McCarthy in culture wars of eerie contemporaneity. (Description of In Search of the Thin Man from the publisher) \nPhilip Zwerling\, now retired to the Mendocino Coast of California\, previously taught creative writing at Ursinus College and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He is the author of seven books on film\, theater and history.
