The largest book club on the West Coast wraps up with a special visit from George Takei\, author of They Called Us Enemy. We’ll be talking to George about the experiences that led to the creation of his memoir\, what it means to be a good neighbor and citizen in the face of overwhelming challenges\, and how shared books and stories build stronger communities. \n\nGeorge Takei is a renowned civil rights activist\, social media icon\, Grammy-nominated recording artist\, New York Times bestselling author\, and pioneering actor whose career has spanned over six decades. Best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek\, Takei has appeared in more than 40 feature films and hundreds of television episodes. SUMMARY:Meet the Author! a talk with Philip Zwerling
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Author! a talk with Philip Zwerling\nThursday\, September 19\, 2024\, 2-3 pm\n  \n \nIn Search of the Thin Man \nThe man who created the boldest hard boiled fiction\, Dashiell Hammett\, wrote The Thin Man in 1933 and launched the fun-loving\, booze-swilling\, mystery-solving couple Nick and Nora Charles into American culture. MGM sold millions of movie tickets by casting William Powell and Myrna Loy as this classiest of romantic couples. Over 14 years and six films\, these stars navigated grave periods of history: the Great Depression\, World War II\, and the Cold War. The novel and films live on as gems of a unique gritty sophistication. \nThis complete history of The Thin Man series covers the brightest stars\, tastiest scandals\, headlines and conflicts behind these classic films. With a cast of hundreds\, we see Hammett\, his lover Lillian Hellman\, and their friend Dorothy Parker fight alcoholism\, sexual convention and Senator Joe McCarthy in culture wars of eerie contemporaneity. (Description of In Search of the Thin Man from the publisher) \nPhilip Zwerling\, now retired to the Mendocino Coast of California\, previously taught creative writing at Ursinus College and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He is the author of seven books on film\, theater and history.
